More than half of the employees received less than 1,000 euros in 2022

More than 50% of workers received a salary of less than 1,000 euros in 2022, a percentage that rises to 65% in the case of young people under 30, according to data from the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security.

According to the document prepared by the Strategy and Planning Bureau (GEP) of the Ministry of Labour, presented at the Social Concert last year 56% of workers in Portugal received a salary of less than €1,000, up from 72% in 2015.

Among young people, 65% received less than 1,000 euros in 2022, compared to 84% in 2015.

The average salary of employees with wages declared to social security was 1,269.34 euros last year, 29% higher than the 2015 value, while for young people (up to 30 years old), the average salary was 1,037.57 euros, 40% more compared to 2015.

GEP data also shows that the percentage of workers receiving up to €760 (the value of the national minimum wage in 2023) has halved in 2022 compared to 2015, from 60% to about 30%.

In terms of salary dynamics, the document indicates that employees who changed companies saw their salary increase by an average of 16.3% in 2022 compared to 2021, while those who remained in the same company saw an average increase of 6.2%.

Given the total number of employees in October, wages increased by an average of 5.2% compared to 2021, the data indicates.
