Le groupe de supermarchés Walmart, premier employer aux Etats-Unis, to announce Mardi qu’il allait relieve the minimum salary in their establishments aux Etats-Unis from 12 to 14 dollars de l’heure, signe that the marché du travail reste tendu dans the country.
The basic salary in the group will go more specifically from 12 to 18 dollars an hour, depending on the country, to a range between 14 and 19 dollars, a company spokeswoman told AFP.
The minimum wage in the United States is nominally $7.25, but many states have set it higher, such as California at $15.
The e-commerce giant Amazon or Target supermarkets also have a minimum wage set at $15 an hour.
1.7 million employees
Between the increase in base wages and increases to employees already with the company, Walmart is expected to increase its average hourly wage to $17.50 by March.
The company, which employed 1.7 million people in the United States at the end of January 2021, will also bolster the training portfolio that funds employees and heavyweight driver’s license assistance.
Despite the economic slowdown and announcements of mass layoffs by some tech giants, the job market remains strong in the United States and certain sectors still struggle to hire, especially with the lowest wages.
The unemployment rate thus fell in December to 3.5%, its lowest level in more than 50 years, while the country’s companies and administrations created 223,000 jobs.
One sign of a possible turning point, though: Median hourly wage growth, at 4.6% vs. December 2021, was the weakest since August 2021.
