Neglecting the “big mobilizations” against the pension reform “would be a mistake” both on the part of the Government and Parliament, the CFDT general secretary, Laurent Berger, warned on Saturday in an interview with Le Monde.
“One or two more shows of force”
After the “big mobilizations” of January 19 (1.12 million participants according to the police, more than 2 million according to the organizers), in particular “big marches in medium-sized cities”, the head of the CFDT underlines that “the opinion constitutes an element of the balance of power”.
Not taking this context into account “would be a mistake”, warns Laurent Berger, concerned about the consequences “if the text passes as it is, without any inflection”, at the risk of generating “resentment” and favoring the extreme right. “We don’t need democratic chaos,” he insists.
Worried about “keeping public opinion” on his side, he does not support the blocking strategy advocated by other organizations, judging that “the level of union effectiveness is not measured by the level of concrete discomfort to citizens.” Nor is he in favor of multiplying the days of action, because “many workers cannot withstand such an intense pace, he believes that” one or two more demonstrations of force are needed for the Executive “to become aware of the powerful rejection that his text”.
