Less morning flights in Orly: a “necessary” decision for the abuse of airlines

The Airport Nuisance Control Authority (ACNUSA) highlights the dire consequences of these abuses to justify this draft decision.

Excitement in the French aviation sector. Earlier in the week he expressed concern about a possible upcoming reduction in morning capacity at Paris-Orly airport requested by the national air navigation operator (DSNA).

According to the general delegate of the Fnam (National Federation of aviation and its trades), Laurent Timsit, “the decision has not yet been officially announced, but we are talking about a limitation to 20 departures in the morning section starting at 6 am to 7 am, instead of at least 25”.

Remember that this slice is crucial for companies. “It is a strategic beach, in particular for companies based in Orly, it allows them to leave early in the morning and do a certain number of rotations during the day”, developed Laurent Timsit.

Too many flights causing cancellations and delays

At first, the sector argued that this decision was linked to an insufficient number of air traffic controllers.

But this Thursday,The Airport Nuisance Control Authority (ACNUSA) considers in a press release “that the regulation of the number of departures in the first hour following the lifting of the curfew (night period in which takeoffs and landings are prohibited, editor’s note ) as well as the number of arrivals in the hour prior to the start of the curfew”.

Especially since Orly is increasingly attractive to airlines looking to strengthen their position at this airport.

“It prevents companies from overloading their daily rotation programs during the summer season (5, 6, 7 or even 8 daily flights) assuming the risk of reproducing the situation of the summer of 2022 that resulted in 7% flight cancellations , a sharp deterioration in punctuality and a sharp increase in non-compliance with environmental regulations,” says this independent regulator.

not reasonable

It invites operators “to take into consideration the acceptability of the flight schedule in the affected territories. Airport territories cannot be victims of competition between companies”.

Clearly, companies appear to have abused these slots, leading to failures, as Gilles Leblanc, president of ACNUSA, confirmed to BFM Business.

“If they schedule all their departures at roughly the same time, they will induce numerous delays themselves that will affect all their flights for the day, including the last of their rotations back to Paris-Orly,” he continues.

“It is not reasonable for companies to show flight schedules that exceed the production capacity of the system. Failure to comply with environmental regulations,” insists Gilles Leblanc.

As a reminder, other French airports must observe a curfew: Basel-Mulhouse, Beauvais-Tillé, Paris-Le Bourget and Nantes-Atlantique.
