Pension reform: Elisabeth Borne says she will “move” on the issue of long careers

The President of the Government claims to have “listened to the request” of the Republicans to limit the contribution period to 43 years for those who began working before the age of 21. He thus hopes to obtain an agreement on the reform, the examination of which begins this Monday in the Assembly.

Will the government take a step towards the Republicans to get their support on pension reform? On the eve of examining the controversial text in the chamber, the Prime Minister hands over to the Sunday newspaper the concessions he is willing to make, under pressure from the right. The highlight: the destination reserved for long races.

At this stage, the government reform plans to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 years, with a gradual extension of the contribution period to 43 years. But a “hole in the racket” of the “long career” device risks forcing employees who started between the ages of 20 and 21 to contribute for 44 years. To restore “balance”, the LR group has tabled amendments giving priority to the contribution period over the retirement age for those who started working early. “Thus, no one will have to contribute more than 43 years,” says the leader, Eric Ciotti.

The consideration of this modification is the condition sine qua non that the Government “win a very large majority” in LR, insists in an interview with Parisian. It is “a central issue that will largely determine my vote,” Haut-Rhin MP Raphaël Schellenberger confirmed on BFMTV on Friday. LR executive vice president Aurélien Pradié has also vowed to vote for the reform if his party’s amendments are taken up “to the comma.”

The arguments of the republicans seem to have defeated the prime minister. In the JDD columns, Elisabeth Borne responds that she “heard his request” aimed at limiting the contribution period to 43 years for those who started working before the age of 21.

And to add: “In this bill, as in the others, we seek agreements beyond the majority.”
