Babysitters in Portugal earn below the global average

The cost of services babysitting in Portugal rose from about 0.66 euros to 6.60 euros per hour in 2023, against 5.49 euros the previous year (20% more), but the country is below the global average of the prices charged (8.25 euros /o’clock). The data has been released by the platform online Babysits, which currently has 14,000 professionals and 1,400 active families.

To the babysitters earn an average of 6.60 euros per hour, but the average value of this type of service can vary depending on location, with Lisbon having the highest cost at 6.88 euros per hour, followed by Faro at 6.87 euros and Porto at 6 .61 euros. The cities with the lowest prices are Coimbra with an hourly rate of 6.26 euros and Viseu with 6.27 euros.

Besides location, there are other factors that can change the compensation these professionals receive, namely the number of children they have to care for when asked to do special activities, such as cooking, doing housework or helping with homework.

The age of children ultimately also matters, as younger children need more care and a lot of supervision, while older children or teenagers are already more independent in performing tasks. However, the value of the service is always negotiated directly with the customer babysit according to the needs of families.

Portugal is below the global average for prices (8.25 euros/hour), although the lowest rate in Europe is 4 euros per hour. Switzerland, Denmark and Australia are among the countries that pay the best babysitterswith average values ​​of EUR 18.78, EUR 15.39 and EUR 14.72 per hour respectively.

Career development in Portugal

Compared to the United States, Portugal does not show such strong habits when it comes to using it babysittersbut the picture seems to have changed in the last three years.

According to Maria Nunes, community manager of Babysits in Portugal and Brazil, the platform reached national territory in 2019, but as if entering a new market wasn’t enough, the following year was marked by the pandemic. “In 2020, we only had 1,200 new registrations, as families were at home and did not need the service,” he explains.

The big growth in activity in Portugal took place in 2021, the year in which the online platform generated 35 thousand new registrations, a number that “increased even more in 2022”.

Through Babysits, families can choose professionals who speak other languages, who can help prepare food or perform household chores. According to community manager platform, help with meals is the “most requested” by families in Portugal.
