The French continue to see their wages increase, but they continue to lose purchasing power. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the Monthly Base Salary Index (SMB) for all employees increased by 0.6% over the third quarter. In a year, it rose 3.8%, according to the latest figures from Dares.
Only when it comes to low wages, the rise is a little more pronounced, with the Base Hourly Wage Index for Workers and Employees (SHBOE) having increased by 0.7% during the fourth quarter in companies with 10 or more employees more from the private sector. sector, and 4.5% in one year.
Substantial increases but still not able to offset the rise in prices. “This evolution must be contrasted with inflation: consumer prices (for all households and excluding tobacco) increase by 6% between the end of December 2021 and the end of December 2022,” recalls Dares. Consequently, the real salary of all wage earners, equivalent to their purchasing power, fell by 2.2%. The drop is slightly less pronounced (-1.5%) for low wages.
Stronger increases in the tertiary sector
It is in the tertiary sector where the monthly base salary increases the most (+3.9% in one year), ahead of industry (+3.8%) and construction (+3.3%). In constant euros, that is, corrected for the price variation, it decreased by 2.1% in services, 2.2% in industry and 2.7% in construction.
The Dares also observes that it is the workers who obtain the highest increases in one year (+4.6%). They are followed by employees (+4.3%), intermediate professions (+3.2%) and managers (+2.9%). But here again, everyone sees their purchasing power drop by 1.4%, 1.7%, 2.8% and 3.1% respectively.
