With more than 2,000 million euros raised, crowdfunding achieves a record year in 2022

Crowdfunding grew 25% in 2022 compared to 2021, still driven by the amounts raised in real estate projects.

Buildings, less polluting boats or even a residence for the elderly: crowdfunding has never raised as much money as in 2022, with 2.3 billion euros raised, although the dynamics are beginning to lose steam, according to a report released this Thursday.

Crowdfunding grew 25% in 2022 compared to 2021, still driven by the amounts raised in real estate projects, according to this annual report by Mazars (an international group specializing in auditing, taxation and consulting) and the French Crowdfunding association.

However, progress has slowed in 2022: crowdfunding increased more than 80% in 2021 and 60% in the previous two years.

Of the 2,300 million euros raised -according to the responses or estimated data from 66 platforms “representing the bulk of the ecosystem”-, real estate projects take the lion’s share with more than 1,600 million euros raised, 40% more in one year.

Donations drop considerably

The sector also stands out for its “insolent performance”, with an internal rate of return of 9.4%, according to Bertrand Desportes, a partner at Mazars.

Nearly 62,000 projects “with a social or environmental dimension” also raised 552 million euros, 25% more in one year.

The TransOceanic Wind Transport company has thus raised more than 3 million euros in bonds convertible into shares to develop cargo ships, while the town of Glange (Haute-Vienne) has raised 65,000 euros in loans to “energy renovate an old post office building and rehabilitate in a health center”.

By contrast, donations through crowdfunding have fallen drastically to just 106.7 million euros, almost half that of 2021 (196.8 million) and even further from the 2020 record (218.5 million).

For the authors of the study, “the contraction of household budgets in an inflationary period” has widened the gap with previous years marked by “elevates of citizen solidarity” in the face of Covid-19.
