Gas consumption in France fell by 9.3% in 2022

Sobriety efforts and high prices in 2022 led to this year-over-year drop in consumption.

The drop in gas consumption in France reached 9.3% in 2022 compared to 2021, Thierry Oublie, general director of GRT Gaz, announced this Friday on Franceinfo.

“Typically, we prefer to see a 1% annual drop, so it’s quite significant,” he adds.

Actions at a good level

Sobriety efforts and high prices in 2022 have led to this drop in gas consumption (in weather-corrected data), excluding gas plants that have been running at full speed to compensate for temporary difficulties in the electric fleet. -French nuclear energy last year, according to data provided this Friday by GRTgaz.

In exclusion of the effects of temperatures, the consumption drop “is 9% over the totality of the year” specified by the person responsible, for a total consumption of 430 TWh (against 474 in 2021) over the ensemble of gas usages in France. If these effects are taken into account, “the reduction in public distribution consumption is 6.2% in the year”.

-12% in industries

On the industry side, TRB Gaz specifies that the fall reached 11.8% (partly due to production cuts). Industrial consumption reached 112.2 TWh in 2022 compared to 129.6 TWh in 2021.

The industries that have reduced their consumption the most are metallurgy, refining-petrochemicals and non-metallic materials and porcelain (-19% for each of the three sectors).

On the contrary, those that have not reduced their consumption or have reduced it slightly are those of paper-cardboard (+1%), agri-food (-3%) and glass (-5%).

Cette de la consommation nationale a toutefois été largely atténuee par la forte poussée de l’utilisation du gaz (+54%) dans les centrales électriques, qui ont tourné à plein régime pour compensar les difficultés passages du parc électro-nucléaire français l’ last year.

On the inventory side, the situation is also favourable: “we managed to fill the warehouses very early, we began to empty them very late. Today we have a fill level of around 57% and we will end the winter with a higher level than usual and that will help us for next winter,” adds Thierry Trouvou.
