Employees at seven German airports, including Frankfurt and Munich, are called on strike on Friday amid tense wage negotiations. The strike should have “strong repercussions, mainly on domestic flights, ranging from delays to cancellations, or even a partial stoppage of traffic,” says the German services union Verdi at the origin of the movement. Airlines and airports have not yet provided traffic forecasts.
The Verdi union is holding sectoral negotiations for public sector workers, airport ground staff and aviation security personnel, to demand better wages to compensate for the loss of purchasing power linked to high inflation.
A strike in Berlin
The one-day work stoppage will affect the airports in the cities of Bremen, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hannover, Munich and Stuttgart.
The union held a similar strike at the Berlin airport last month, resulting in around 300 flights being canceled or rescheduled.
The inflation records recorded in recent months in Germany, with a peak of 10.4% in October, have strained annual wage negotiations in the different sectors of activity in the country, sometimes accompanied by work stoppages.
The employees of Correos have thus observed several days of strike since the beginning of the year, at the call of the Verdi union that demands in particular a 15% increase in wages.
