Vladimir Putin defends the “resilience” of the Russian economy

Almost a year after the start of the conflict, the Kremlin strongman has shown his determination towards Ukraine and ensures that Russia’s economy is stronger than the West imagines.

During a highly anticipated speech on Tuesday, the Russian president told Westerners that international economic sanctions had little effect on his country.

If these decisions to dispense with Russian gas in particular are aimed at inflicting “suffering” on the population, the master of the Kremlin considers it a failure.

The drop in GDP would have been only 2 to 2.5%, far from the hopes of Western countries that had “predicted the collapse of the Russian economy.” According to him, the forecasts were ten times higher. The IMF expects a drop in GDP of around 2.2% in Russia by 2022.

Vladimir Putin even highlights the strength of certain sectors such as agriculture or construction.

Clearly, it is counting on the recovery of the domestic market to offset the collapse of international trade.

Appeal to the oligarchs

To do this, he energetically calls on the Russian oligarchs to repatriate their capital to their country. “Invest in Russian projects”, he launched into his fate. Before attacking: “no Russian felt sorry for those who lost their yachts and palaces abroad.”

Praising the greatness of Russia, Vladimir Putin assures that “the country will overcome all challenges” thanks to “its strength”.
