“We made people believe that food costs nothing”: agriculture suffers from the price war

Invited to BFM Business, the president of Young Farmers felt that French agriculture was suffering from the distributors’ price war.

On the eve of the inauguration of the Paris Agricultural Show, the agricultural world denounces the practices of mass distribution. “Unfortunately, with the famous ‘anti-inflation’ lists, we ended up in an unprecedented price war and in particular all our French SMEs are suffering from this price war,” said Arnaud Gaillot, president of the Youth agricultural union, on Friday. peasants (JA), in the plateau of BFM business.

As trade negotiations draw to a close, Arnaud Gaillot believes farmers are not being heard enough. “Many times we find ourselves before a wall,” said the president of Young Farmers. “With the Egalim law we have managed to take the agricultural issue into account” but the companies “that transform our products have increases in cardboard, in electricity” and the distributors believe that “it is not [leur] problem,” he said.

We “fooled” the French

Given the increase in costs, farmers are giving up certain productions. “The most symptomatic is breeding,” said Arnaud Gaillot. “For years, livestock has lost 650,000 heads a year. Last year, dairy farming [a suivi] the same trend with 650,000 heads” less, he said. Farmers “stop producing and suddenly […] We are going to import products from other places”, lamented the president of the agricultural union.

“We have made the French believe” for decades “that” food costs nothing “but” it is false, “argued Arnaud Gaillot. “We deceived them” and that made “little by little the farms in France disappear.”
