Sweden will deliver “about” 10 Leopard tanks to kyiv along with anti-aircraft systems, the Swedish government announced Friday as the world marks the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “We have decided to deliver Swedish Leopard 2 tanks,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told a news conference.
Defense Minister Pål Jonson added that the country plans to provide “about ten” tanks. “The model we have is called the 2A5,” he said. According to Pål Jonson, this model is similar to those used in Germany. Therefore, the tanks will be sent as part of the German coordination group. The Prime Minister also announced that Sweden will deliver the IRIS-T and HAWK anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine.

This Swedish promise comes a day after neighboring Finland announced that it would send three of its Leopard tanks. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also urged his allies on Friday to deliver promised tanks to kyiv, after long hesitating to allow them to be sent to Ukraine. The country finally relented in January by announcing the shipment of fourteen Leopard tanks, in order to assemble two battalions of these combat vehicles for Ukraine.
Poland also announced on Friday that four of its Leopard 2 tanks had already reached Ukrainian territory and that the country would send more “in a few days.”
