Taxpayers have until next Monday to consult invoices of expenditure in 2022 at the NIF and to register the missing expenditure. This is also the last day to report to the household.
These are two of the steps for preparing the delivery of the annual IRS return, which begins April 1, and which affect the amount of tax each taxpayer must pay or receive (via refund).
In the case of households, the reporting deadline is usually set for February 15, but this year the government decided to extend it to today.
Taxpayers therefore had 12 days to update the household composition with the Tax and Customs Administration (AT), so that the IRS assessment takes into account any changes from the past year.
This notice is particularly relevant in cases where there have been changes in the household in the previous year following death, marriage, divorce, adoption or birth of children, change of parental agreement or change of permanent residence.
Without this updated information, AT will consider the personal and family information contained in last year’s IRS filing.
Updating the household can be done through the Financial Portal, this is the time to also indicate the situations where the children pass the age where they are no longer considered dependents for the purposes of the IRS.
As with the household communication, the deadline for families with students displaced in educational institutions in an interior or an autonomous region to pass on the respective expenses, including rent, has been extended to today.
It should be remembered that since 2019, education expenditures have increased for students displaced in the interior or in the autonomous regions, for IRS purposes.
Today is also the last day on which the taxpayer can view, confirm and register the invoices of the expenses of the past year, as well as transfer the pending expenses to the ‘drawer’ of the relevant deduction.
Also in this case, the deadline has been ‘extended’ by two days, as this is usually a task that must be completed by February 25.
Since the 2015 IRS reform, IRS deductions relate to invoices for taxpayer expenses and to which they have attached their NIF.
Invoices thus make it possible to reduce the amount of tax that each taxpayer has to pay, although in the case of expenses for education, health and housing it is possible to reduce the deductible amount calculated and pre-populated by the Tributária e Aduaneira (AT ) in the IRS return and declare another based on the invoices that have been kept and that have the NIF.
After this step of confirming invoices, from March 16 to March 31, taxpayers can still consult deductible expenses and complain about invoices/general family expenses.
The issuance of the IRS return or confirmation of the automatic return must be done between April 1 and June 30.
