It will not be a “red” March, but a “red” first half on the food price front.
This is how Dominique Schelcher, the head of System U, estimated this Monday over France Inter. Two days before the end of the trade negotiations and while food inflation reached 14.5% annually in February, the distributor estimates that prices will rise even more.
In a year and a half, therefore, the prices of consumer products will have jumped almost 25% if the estimates of the head of System U turn out to be correct.
“A Search for the Unexpected Effect”
While according to the Ania food industry lobby, only 60% of the brands have signed with mass distribution (compared to 80% a year ago at the same time), distribution points to the responsibility of large industrialists .
The System U boss accuses some of his major vendors of demanding price increases that aren’t always justified.
With 48 hours to go before the end of the negotiations, Dominique Schelcher wants to be confident in any case and assures that consumers will not have to suffer from a shortage of products.
