“My father died when I was 16 years old”: Christine Lagarde moved when talking about her family on Spanish Television

Asked about her personal life, the ECB president did not hide her emotion when referring to her family, during an interview with Televisión Española.

On a trip to Spain this Thursday, Christine Lagarde gave a long interview to the Antena 3 television network. After commenting on the ECB’s performance in the face of inflation, the president of the Frankfurt institution, when asked about her personal journey, did not hide her emotion. her when she saw photos of her parents and her siblings scrolling on the screens.

“It’s always moving to see your family members. My father died when I was 16,” she said. It was after this personal ordeal, in 1974, that Christine Lagarde left France to live and study in the United States, before returning to France to complete her studies and become a lawyer at the Paris Bar in 1981, then Minister, the first woman to head the International Monetary Fund in 2011 and eventually became president of the European Central Bank in 2019.

“We will do whatever it takes to bring inflation down to 2%”

Moments later, one of Christine Lagarde’s three brothers, Luc Lalouette, intervened in a video to testify to the “happy” childhood of the brothers, of whom her sister is the eldest. “We had a very happy childhood. (…) I remember that when I was about 13 years old, she spent a lot of time studying,” he said.

And to continue: “At that time we were already very involved in political issues. That was due to our parents because when we had lunch, when we had dinner, we listened to the radio and it was always very political. Sometimes we participated in the protests and Christine and I loved being on the front lines fighting against any kind of law that we didn’t like.”

Beyond her career, Christine Lagarde was asked of course about inflation and said she “doesn’t have much doubt” about another rate hike being announced at the next ECB meeting on March 16.
