The UN Secretary General considered this Wednesday “essential” to extend the agreement on Ukraine’s grain exports concluded with Russia, a vital text for the world’s food supply that expires on March 18.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, also considered that the extension of the agreement was “absolutely necessary for the whole world.” According to Antonio Guterres, the agreement allowed the export of 23 million tons of Ukrainian cereals, which until then had been blocked in the ports due to the Russian invasion.
Antonio Guterres recalled that cereals and fertilizers from Ukraine, but also from Russia, were “essential for world food security and food prices”, in a context of widespread inflation in many countries of the world.
Ukraine on Tuesday called for international efforts to keep open the Black Sea shipping lanes used to transport its grain and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called at the G20 in early March for Russia to renew the deal.
Russia, for its part, complains that the part of this agreement that would allow it to export fertilizer without Western sanctions is not fully respected in its eyes.
