Totalenergies has become a “scapegoat” in the energy price debate, its CEO Patrick Pouyanné said on Wednesday, defending the profits obtained in 2022 by the French energy group.
The group, for example, favored imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe, particularly from the United States, where it is a major player, and tried to make up for the loss of Russian diesel, Pouyanné said. “They asked us to do it,” he explained, referring to the authorities, without further details.
super profits
“When you announce billions and billions of ‘Euro profits’ and at the same time people see the price of fuel going higher and higher, they think you’re making money on gasoline. That’s not true.”
“It’s the debate. We have to accept it,” explained Patrick Pouyanné.
Totalenergies generated $20.5 billion in net profit last year, the biggest in its history, thanks mainly to rising oil and gas prices.
The group undertook, in February, to limit the price per liter of 95 unleaded gasoline or diesel to 1.99 euros at the 3,400 TotalEnergies service stations in France.
