Garbage bags litter the sidewalks of Paris, on the eighth day of the garbage collectors’ strike. Municipal agents protest against the pension reform. In total, 5,400 tons of garbage are deposited on the sidewalks of the capital, according to a latest report published this Sunday by the Paris City Council.
A situation that exasperates some of the inhabitants. They point out the lack of hygiene and the health risks associated with the accumulation of waste. The right-wing opposition and the Minister of Transport went there with their tweet, attacking the management of the Paris city council.
This social movement does not have the same consequences in all the streets of the capital. Municipal services collect waste from districts 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16, 17 and 20 of the capital. In the others, private companies are in charge of collecting the garbage cans.
A collection carried out by the municipality… and private companies
Four private service providers share the Parisian rubbish bin market: Derichebourg for the 7th and central 1st, 3rd and 4th arrondissements. In addition to the 10th and 18th arrondissements. Urbapropreté is in charge of the Northeastern arrondissements of the capital (11th and 19). Pizzorno collects waste from the 15th arrondissement, in the southwest of Paris. Finally, the Sepur company picks them up on the 13th.
This does not mean that all this waste can be treated. Once collected, the trash cans are sent to one of four incinerators in the inner suburbs… three of which are currently blocked, according to the Paris city hall.
A backup plan has been put in place to avoid saturation of waste, but not all private trash cans can be collected. Unless the garbage collectors lift their strike notice.
