“The temptation of violence is there”: Berger asks Macron to withdraw the pension reform “before disaster strikes”

The head of the CFDT, Laurent Berger, once again asks the President of the Republic to withdraw the pension reform, believing that a “catastrophe” can occur “in the medium and long term”.

Since Thursday and the application of article 49.3 of the Constitution to approve the pension reform, there have been dozens of demonstrations throughout France. Some of them have been marred by damage or violence, especially in Paris. “If we do not want it to fall into a democratic problem, including violence, we must withdraw this text,” the head of the CFDT warned this Sunday on the set of France 5.

“A form of contempt for social democracy”

“I believe that today several ingredients are gathered for a promotion in the National Association,” said the union leader, repeating comments already made a few weeks ago.

But Laurent Berger believes that since Thursday and the use of 49.3, “we see that the temptation to violence, to radicalism, to the politicization of this social conflict is very present.”

“What is happening is a form of contempt for parliament, but it is also a form of contempt for social democracy”, criticizes Laurent Berger, who stresses that all the demonstrations at the initiative of the unions since the beginning of the social movement “have been “hyper clean”.

Inside ReleaseLaurent Berger asks Emmanuel Macron not to promulgate the pension reform if the motions of censure are not approved this Monday in the National Assembly.

Laurent Berger also proposes to call a social conference. “There are deficit problems, we discuss them, but we also discuss the evolution of work, the feeling of non-recognition of a certain number of workers who have been classified as ‘second line'”, he pleads. “You have to sit reasonably around the table.”
