“Denial and lies”: Laurent Berger questions Macron’s comments on the CFDT’s position on pensions

In his interview, the President of the Republic assures that the union had initially decided to “increase the durations”.

The towel burns again between Emmanuel Macron and Laurent Berger, the general secretary of the CFDT.

The latter accused the President of the Republic on Wednesday of having lied in his interview on TF1 and France 2 about the CFDT’s position on pensions, “to hide his inability to find a majority to vote for his unjust reform.”

“Denial and lies! The CFDT has a pension reform project. Macron 2019 had understood it, had assumed our ambition for a universal system. Macron 2023 is remaking history and lying to @cfdt to hide his inability to find a majority to vote for his unfair reform”, he reacted on Twitter.

Emmanuel Macron stated in his interview that “the general secretary of the CFDT, for whom (he) has esteem and respect, had gone to his congress proposing to increase the durations. He was not followed (…) but he had this desire to make people work more “.

Questioned by AFP, Laurent Berger confirmed that his tweet pointed in particular to this statement, according to which he would have proposed to Congress to extend the listing period.

During the Lyon Congress in June 2022, the CFDT leadership suffered a snub when forced by an internal vote to toughen its general resolution.

“Hollow Words”

Delegates had adopted an amendment stating that “increased life expectancy cannot justify an increase in the average settlement age”, thus taking the opposite view of the initial formulation, which stated that “increased life expectancy can justify an increase in the average settlement age”.

For Laurent Berger, Emmanuel Macron also lied “about the fact that there would only be responsibility in one field”, “about the fact that we did not make any counterproposals”. “We made a counterproposal, it is the universal pension system.”

“It is serious to point out a responsibility of a union organization at this point. And after saying ‘we are going to want to discuss among all. It gives a lot of anger,'” he protested.

When asked about the president’s desire to re-engage in a dialogue with the social partners on work, Laurent Berger criticized the “hollow words”.

“There is a delay in decency. There is even decency in the way you address your interlocutors,” he said, denouncing an intervention that was not made “to appease” but “to explain that we had misunderstood and that he was also the only camp”. of responsibility”.
