Carrefour: the board of directors wants to extend the mandate of Alexandre Bompard until 2026

Carrefour’s board of directors wishes to renew the mandate of Alexandre Bompard’s CEO “in advance” to “align” it with the distributor’s strategic plan, presented last November.

The board of directors of Carrefour will propose to its shareholders to extend until 2026 the mandate of its CEO Alexandre Bompard, in office since mid-2017, at the next general meeting of the group on May 26, according to a statement from Wednesday. press.

The former president of Europe 1 (2008-2010) and head of Fnac (2011-2017), enarque and finance inspector, turned 50 in October 2022. His mandate initially extended until 2024, but the board of directors intends to renew it ” in advance” to “align” it with the distributor’s strategic plan, presented last November.

This strategic plan, which outlines the distributor’s main directions for 2026, favors the development of a discount offer, popular among consumers in times of inflation. “My resolution will be impeccable to achieve all the objectives set by the Carrefour 2026 plan, together with the 500,000 people who work for the brand and with a government that I want to be demanding,” said the group’s CEO, quoted in a statement.

Make Carrefour “the world leader in the food transition for all”

It came to the forefront of the second largest retailer in France in market share, behind the independent chain E.Leclerc, with a great challenge: to put a giant with a disruptive economic model back on its feet, very present in hypermarkets format in a time when consumers are moving further and further away from it. It had set itself the goal of making Carrefour “the world leader in the food transition for all”, “redesigning” its model “at the service of better food, flavor and quality food at an affordable price for all”.

Arriving with a solid reputation in terms of strategic mergers after having succeeded in the union of Fnac and Darty, he suffered setbacks in this area but assures that Carrefour can continue walking alone in a sector where everyone predicts consolidation. On the social front, the group’s financial documentation draws a double movement: the workforce decreases in Europe, but expands in South America, particularly in Brazil, where Carrefour is the undisputed leader

In France, the unions accuse Alexandre Bompard of being the architect, with the transition of many companies to lease management, of a great plan of “outsourcing stores” with strong social consequences, which he denies. On the economic level, Carrefour has announced for 2022 a turnover that increases by 16% to 90,800 million euros, and a net profit that jumps to 1,350 million euros, 26% better than the previous year.
