Does apprenticeship always provide easier access to employment?

Twelve months after finishing their degree, 70% of young people in work-study programs were employed last year. In 2020, this professional integration rate was 65%. The boom in learning thanks to the aid granted to employers, therefore, has not harmed the integration of young people trained in study and work programmes.

Year after year, the number of young people who undergo work-study training continues to grow. In 2022, the number of contracts signed in the public and private sectors increased further (+13.7%) to reach a new record, with more than 837,000. At the end of December 2022, France had close to one million (979,500) young people in apprenticeships according to Dares’ count.

This rise in power was defended tooth and nail by Elisabeth Borne, both when she was Labor Minister and since her appointment at Matignon. Not without raising criticism linked to the unexpected effect for companies: by continuing to offer employers exceptional aid in hiring apprentices, does the Government run the risk of favoring young people who want to train to the detriment of those who have finished their career? ? It is clear that employers would favor the hiring of young graduates, that cheap labor -if we include state aid-.

Even without having obtained their diploma, most apprentices find work

At the moment, the figures do not show it. On the contrary. The latest data published by Dares on young people who completed their degree (from CAP to BTS) in 2021 shows that the level of professional integration has continued to grow since 2019. In the twelve months after graduation, 75% of young trainees had I found a job.

Even including non-graduates, the rate remains high: 70% against 65% in 2020, for young people who completed their degree in 2019. Because almost two thirds (63%) of those who did not obtain the expected at the end of their contract manage, however, to enter the world of work in the year following its failure.

A much stronger integration than with the classic school curriculum

But to get an idea of the importance of this pace of professional integration, we can compare it with that prevailing among young people who have opted for vocational training in school. According to the latest data from the Department of Evaluation, Projection and Performance of the Ministry of National Education, it rose to 41% in 2022, also on the rise, since it was limited to 37% a year earlier. The latest statistics also show strong variations depending on the title obtained.

The magazine L’Etudiant highlighted last January that the employment rate six months after completing the studies was 28% for CAP graduates, 40% with a Bac Pro and 56% with a BTS. A level much lower than that shown by alternating training: 65% for the CAP, 70% for the Bac Pro and 75% for the BTS.

With, however, a drawback that critics of apprenticeships insist on: the large number of premature terminations of contracts among young apprentices. A figure that has not been reported since 2019. At that time, it was just over 31%.
