Pensions: for 3 out of 4 French people, the Government must withdraw its reform to end strikes and blockades

BFMTV SURVEY. The mobilization against the pension reform continues to be supported mainly by the French, 63% of them even calling for it to continue.

Two weeks after the approval of the pension reform by 49.3 in the National Assembly, the mobilization against this text continues. According to a poll by Elabe for BFMTV published on Wednesday, 73% of the French polled believe that the government should withdraw its reform to end blockades and strikes.

On the contrary, 26% think that the executive should not give in, 1% say they have no opinion.

Voters for 2022 LFI presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon (89%) and those for RN candidate Marine Le Pen (87%) gave this particular response. Voters for Emmanuel Macron in the second round vote 56% for withdrawal.

“The approval of the mobilization does not decline”

The majority of those surveyed still declare themselves in favor of the mobilization: 63% (+3 points since March 22) approve it, compared to 25% (-3) who disapprove.

“Since the end of January, the approval of the mobilization has not decreased and oscillates between 60% and 68%,” underlines the survey, a dynamic that “differs from the suffocation measured during the social movement against the pension reform of Édouard Philippe (former Prime Minister) where approval had fallen from 64% to 47% between November 6, 2019 and January 15, 2020.”

40% of those surveyed (-4 since March 22) even believe that “the mobilization must get tougher, increase”, 23% (+2) “that it must continue in the same way as now”. They are also 37% (+3) to answer that the movement “must stop”.

Borne and Macron, “mainly responsible for the social conflict”

What’s more, the vast majority of those consulted consider that the responsibility for the social conflict falls on the Executive, “an opinion that is clearly on the rise,” says Elabe. For 62% (+9 since March 10) of them “Emmanuel Macron and the government of Elisabeth Borne are the main people responsible for the social conflict around the pension reform”.

The pension reform and the strong mobilization against this project have also contributed to the deterioration of Elisabeth Borne’s image: since September “it has been deteriorating in all categories of the population and electorates, even among voters of Emmanuel Macron from the 1st lap”. . 64% of those surveyed consider her “authoritarian”, 52% as “arrogant” and, on the contrary, only 13% say that she is “capable of uniting the French”, 16% “capable of making compromises with the opposition”.

This survey was carried out on a sample of 1005 French representatives, over 18 years old, according to the quota method, via the Internet from March 28 to 29, 2023.
