EU states and MEPs agreed on Thursday a target of 42.5% renewables in European energy consumption by 2030, almost doubling the current level of 22%, several elected members of the European Parliament announced.
The text, which provides for accelerated procedures for infrastructure, considers that biomass -wood used for energy production- is “green”, says Markus Pieper, MEP of the European People’s Party.
This practice denounced by the environmental NGOs is, however, “better framed”, assures the liberal deputy Pascal Canfin, who also welcomes the “recognition of the specific role of nuclear energy, neither green nor fossil” to produce carbon-free hydrogen, an issue that deeply divides the Twenty-seven.
