Russian invasion: the cost for Ukraine estimated at almost 1 billion dollars

The cost to Ukraine of the Russian invasion, launched on February 24, is estimated at nearly $1 trillion, an adviser to Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

1000 billion, or five annual GDP! This amount revealed on Thursday by an adviser to Volodymyr Zelensky is the cost to Ukraine of the war launched by Russia.

For the current year, the Ukrainian authorities expect a drop in its GDP of between 35 and 40%, “the biggest drop in our GDP since 1991”, also lamented Oleg Ustenko.

$40 billion deficit

The budget deficit would thus expand, according to this adviser to Volodymyr Zelensky, by “about 5,000 million euros per month.”

By 2023, the deficit could reach $40 billion, the adviser said. In addition to the damage and cost of military resistance to the Russian invasion, Kyiv also cannot count on tax revenue.

Some companies have thus been “destroyed by the Russians, or do not work all day or do not operate at full capacity,” explained Oleg Ustenko.

Ukraine asked the IMF in August for a new aid program, supposedly part of a broader international effort led in particular by the United States and the EU. The World Bank had estimated on September 9 the cost of reconstruction alone at almost 350 billion euros, specifying that it should “increase even more in the coming months as the war continues”.
