In the United States, McDonald’s office employees are called to stay home this week. Management also asked them to cancel all meetings organized with people from outside the company. But some will never come back.
Between Monday and Wednesday, the fast food chain will launch its great restructuring plan announced at the beginning of the year. “Some jobs that exist today will move or disappear,” said Chris Kempczinski, CEO of McDonald’s.
layoffs announced virtually
The list of laid off employees is already fixed. “During the week of April 3, we will communicate key decisions related to staffing roles and levels across the organization,” the company said in the post seen by the Wall Street Journal.
Specifically, laid-off workers will learn it remotely. For the multinational, this method ensures “comfort” and “confidentiality”. McDonald’s declined to disclose the number of posts cut.
Several waves of layoffs have already taken place in recent years at McDonald’s. Since 2017, the fast-food leader has been classifying its administrative staff to reduce expenses.
Worldwide, it employs more than 105,000 people in leadership roles, 70% of whom are located outside of the United States. But millions of people work for the company, which has 40,000 restaurants worldwide, 80% of which are franchises.
Since the health crisis, companies are reducing costs and staff due to economic uncertainty and a lack of visibility about the near future. Last month, Amazon announced the loss of an additional 9,000 jobs, on top of the 18,000 layoffs already announced in January, or around 1.7% of the workforce.
