Industrial production in France rebounded 1.2% over a month in February after falling 1.4% in January, boosted by the transport equipment, INSEE reported on Wednesday.
The production of automobiles increased by 3.4% in February compared to January while that of “other transport material”, which includes aircraft in particular, increased by 7.3%, detailed the National Institute of Statistics.
In the last three months (December to February) compared to the same period last year, the automobile industry has seen its production increase by 16.4%, since it is “less affected than a year ago by the difficulties in the supply of electronic components”, explains INSEE in its press release.
Decrease in electricity production
The “extractive industries, energy, water” sector, for its part, fell by 6.1% in the same period, “mainly due to the drop in electricity production”. Also in one year, the steel industry plummeted 25.9% in a “context of higher electricity and gas prices”, as did the manufacture of cellulose, paper and cardboard (-22.5%) and the basic chemistry (-19.9%). .
In one month, compared to January, the manufacturing industry as a whole in February directed its production upwards by 1.3%, after having fallen by 1.5% the previous month. Still more than a month later, most of the large branches recovered in February, the food industry 1.6%, capital goods 0.9%, chemicals 1.9% and pharmaceuticals 3, 8%
Apart from the manufacturing sector, the “extractive industries, energy, water” sector experienced a very slight increase of 0.3%, while construction increased by 1.6%. The figures for January, both for industry as a whole and for the manufacturing sector, were revised upwards by the institute, which had initially reported production cuts of 1.9% and 1.0%, respectively.
