Icelandic airline Icelandair will order up to 25 Airbus A321s to renew its fleet, it announced Thursday night. “Icelandair and Airbus have signed a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of 13 Airbus A321XXL with purchase rights for an additional 12 aircraft,” the Nordic airline said in a statement.
The amount of the contract has not been made public. “With the acquisition of the Airbus, Icelandair will complete the replacement of the Boeing 757,” he said. The European planemaker was preferred over its American rival, whose 757s will be phased out.
Operation of Airbus aircraft from 2025
Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled for 2029, but Icelandair plans to start operating Airbus aircraft from 2025 with the lease of four single-aisle A321LR aircraft ending soon.
Icelandair, which carried 3.7 million passengers in 2022, has 48 aircraft.
