Driven by the mobilization against the pension reform, the affiliation of employees to unions has skyrocketed in recent months. On Thursday, a new survey conducted by Elabe for the echoes it came to confirm the spectacular renaissance of the popularity of the unions whose action is widely approved by the French.
To measure it, it is enough to compare what the latter were saying in 2020. Three years ago, for a large majority of French people, the workers’ unions were a blocking element in French society. Today, they are 52% to think on the contrary that they are an element of dialogue.
The French, however, remain more skeptical about the effectiveness of the unions’ action. 55% of those surveyed (not only employees) value positively the results obtained by union representatives within companies. But their effectiveness in negotiating at the local level both for general wage increases and working conditions is considered much less when the spectrum is broadened: almost two in three French people consider that their action at the national level is not really (42% ) or not at all (22%). ) effective.
Clearly, the majority of the French judge positively the action of the unions when it goes through the negotiation. On the other hand, the traditional strikes and demonstrations convince only a minority of them. But it is the petitions (66% consider them ineffective) and the even more violent demonstrations (76%) that are the most massively rejected actions.
The CGT is on an equal footing with the CFDT
If all the unions are recovering their image, it is the CGT that is doing it the most: 29% of the French (compared to 21% in 2020) trust it to improve the situation of employees. Now it is on a par with the CFDT, which has also made progress but in a more modest way.
These two unions are widening the distance with the others and in particular with Unsa (5% confidence compared to 9% in 2020) and the CFE-CGC (5% compared to 6% in 2020) which are the only ones that see deterioration your rating.
However, the most striking data from this survey is the percentage of French people who do not trust any union to improve the situation of their employees: 43%. Therefore, mistrust towards these organizations remains high, even if the fight against the pension reform allows them to improve their image.
