Inflation. 42% of the most precarious French say they have suppressed a meal, according to Ifop

Inflation hits the plate of the most modest French hard. In fact, many of them have sacrificed a meal for it, according to an Ifop study on food insecurity revealed this morning in the parisian.

For the most modest French, inflation weighs heavily on the plate: more than 4 out of 10 French, among the most precarious population, say they have cut a meal to fit their budget, according to an Ifop study for ‘La Tablée des chefs ‘ published this Saturday by The Parisian.

sacrifice in meals

The survey, which covers the poorest 30% of French people who earn minimum wage or less, paints a sad picture of the situation. According the parisian79% of those surveyed have restricted their food purchases due to the rise in prices, which is especially pronounced in food.

In detail, just over half of the 1,007 French people surveyed said they had to cut back on portions, while 42% of them had to sacrifice a meal.

The newspaper also points out that none of the precarious profiles escapes: students, retirees, singles… Everyone has to tighten their belts to face galloping inflation.

“They don’t necessarily reduce the amounts of food at every meal, but it does come out regularly. The last alarm regarding the consumer crisis had been given by the yellow vests, a slightly more affluent public, who could no longer treat themselves to little pleasures,” explains Jérome Fourquet, director of the Ifop public opinion department, in Parisian.

Food inflation is 15% in a year

The prices of our cars rose more than 15% annually in March, an increase well above general inflation, which was 5.6% according to INSEE figures. It is only from the summer that food inflation should start to slow down, after it has already been in turmoil for several months.

Jérôme Fourquet explains in the parisian that if the modest French adapted their purchases for a long time, now they must do so in products that satisfy essential needs.

And among these products that are bought the least according to the study are fruits and vegetables, which also worries respondents who fear that it will deteriorate their health.
