Why more and more employees have to settle for the Smic

For two years, the Smic benefited from an automatic revaluation of 10%. While in the same period, all workers and employees only benefited from an average increase of 6.5%. Part of these low wages have thus been “trapped” by the minimum wage.

Given the rise in prices, low wages are not all in the same boat. far from there Employees paid with the Smic have been protected from inflation by the automatic and multi-year revaluation of the minimum wage.

To get an idea of the increase received without having to claim anything from his employer, an employee who is a Smic beneficiary, just compare his last payroll with that of March 2021. Excluding bonuses and overtime, his net salary increased from 1,230.60 to 1,353 0.07 euros, that is, 10% more.

Two-year average increase in worker and employee wages: +6.5%

But workers and employees who earn a little more than the minimum wage have not seen their wages increase 10% in two years. The possible increases that their employers have granted them are far, with few exceptions, from compensating for the rise in prices.

On average, in two years, his base salary (excluding bonuses and overtime) has been, according to data from Dares, 6.5%. In other words, those who two years ago received a salary very slightly higher than the Smic are today with a remuneration equivalent to the minimum wage. They were somewhat “trapped” by the minimum wage.

Almost 1 in 6 employees paid minimum wage, like in 2005?

As a result, the proportion of employees who are satisfied with the minimum wage today is progressing at high speed. On January 1, 2021, they only represented 12% of employees. A year later, the Dares estimate them at 14.5%, an unprecedented level for about fifteen years.

And everything indicates that from January 1 that quota is even higher. Maybe even at an all-time high. Pending the publication of these statistics, we can remember that the highest level since the beginning of the century dates from 2005. At that time, one in six employees earned the minimum wage. This level then reversed, falling back below the symbolic 10% bar in 2010.
