Berlin gave Poland the go-ahead on Thursday to hand over five MiG-29 fighters formerly belonging to the GDR to Ukraine. On April 5, Polish President Andrzej Duda announced during a visit to Warsaw by his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that Poland was ready to deliver its entire fleet of Soviet-designed MiG-29 fighters “in the future” to Kiev. , a total of thirty aircraft.
This delivery could be made “subject to an agreement by its allies” in NATO, he had specified. Warsaw had to seek Berlin’s approval for the re-export of these five aircraft because they previously belonged to East Germany.
No modern western aircraft
In its press release, the German Ministry of Defense specifies: “The government does not know if there will be other authorization requests from the Polish government for the delivery of other aircraft – which still have to be adapted to current standards, editor’s note –“.
Slovakia and Poland began delivering Soviet-designed Mig-29 fighter jets to kyiv in late March and early April, respectively. No modern Western aircraft, claimed by kyiv, has yet been delivered, even if several Western countries, such as Denmark, have shown opportunities in this direction.
