“We have always believed in the word of the Prime Minister that it was necessary to find a solution and it seems to me that today an important step has been taken in that direction,” he added.
Banif’s working group for the settlement of injuries consists of representatives from ALBOA, the Ministry of Finance, Banco de Portugal and the Securities Market Commission (CMVM).
Before the next meeting, ALBOA, through its lawyer, Nuno Silva Vieira, will send documentation on the number of victims, the amounts involved and financial products.
In December 2019, a committee of experts appointed by the Portuguese Bar Association concluded that there were signs of illegal practices in the sale of financial products at Banif and validated 2,330 requests from Banif victims, with a value of 230 of the investments involved. million euros .
Since then, a solution is expected to compensate these victims (albeit partially) for the money lost. At stake are values of around 450 million euros.
According to ALBOA, the ‘injured Banif’ is on average 61 years old, has a low education (39% has less than the 4th year of primary education) and comes from the Azores or Madeira. The average investment is EUR 73.5 thousand and Banif subordinated bonds are the most common financial product.
Friday’s meeting took place together with the injured parties from the external offices of Banif and BES.
