Faced with food inflation, Macron warns that it will be “difficult until the end of summer”

Faced with these waves, the Head of State advocated “working to pay better”, returning the ball to “employers” and “social dialogue”.

Emmanuel Macron warned this Sunday in the parisian that the situation will be difficult “until the end of the summer” as regards the prices of food products, which are currently the main driver of inflation in France.

“I’ll be honest, food prices will be tough until the end of the summer,” the president warned, as year-over-year food prices continued to accelerate, rising 15.9% in March (after 14.8% in February). . Faced with these waves, the Head of State advocated “working to pay better”, returning the ball to “employers” and “social dialogue”.

A “very sensitive” period

Inflation reached 5.7% a year in France in March, driven by rising food prices, the National Statistics Institute said in mid-April. Both fresh products, such as fruits and vegetables, and non-fresh products, such as bread, cereals, meat, cheese, chocolate or drinks, are affected by this trend.

At the end of March, the governor of the Banque de France, François Villeroy de Galhau, had underlined the existence of a “very sensitive period of high food prices” for the French.

According to the Banque de France’s 2023-2025 projections, food inflation has replaced energy inflation as the main driver of price increases and should peak “towards the end of the first half of the year “.

The question of salary increases

Then, prices would increase more slowly but “we do not expect food prices to fall within the horizon of our projection”, that is to say 2025, had warned Matthieu Lemoine, one of the authors of these projections.

Questioned this Sunday noon by LCI, RTL and Le Figaro, the president of Medef Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux stated that his employer was not ready to discuss salaries at the national level.

But “it is discussed at the level of the branches and at the level of the companies,” he added in response to a question about the discussions that could begin with the unions after the promulgation of the pension reform.
