Government reduces ISP fuel discount in May

Discounts on the ISP will drop to 30 cents per liter of diesel and 31.6 cents for gasoline in May, down from the current 34 cents, and the carbon tax will be gradually updated, the Treasury Department said.

The ministry emphasizes in a statement that the reference price of diesel and gasoline is currently below the price that justified the initial mitigation measures at the ISP level and that fuel consumption in the first quarter of 2023 reached the record of the past decade.

He also points out that fuel excise duty in Portugal is “significantly below the weighted average” of the eurozone.

“In this way, the government will gradually unblock the update of the addition to CO2 emissions (carbon tax),” he says, explaining that in this way it pursues environmental objectives and gradually aligns the weight of taxes on fuels in Portugal with the average from the euro zone.

“Taking into account the measures in force, the tax reduction in May will amount to 30 cents per liter of diesel and 31.6 cents per liter of petrol,” he says.

As part of measures to support the agricultural sector, the government maintains the reduction in agricultural diesel tax of 6 cents per litre.
