The world’s electric car sales are up 55% to more than 10 million by 2022, representing 14% of the total, and will grow by 35% in 2023, or 18% of global purchases, according to a report which was released this Wednesday.
In its annual report on the electric vehicle market, the International Energy Agency (IEA) explained that in 2022 there will be a fleet of 26 million units, five times more than in 2018, and that more than half (13.8 million) will be in China was located.
As has been the case for the past 10 years, by 2022 the Asian giant was by far the largest market in the world, accounting for 60% of registrations.
The authors of the study estimate that this year will end with about eight million electric cars in the Chinese market, representing a share of about 35%.
In Europe, also in the context of the sector’s decline, registrations of electric vehicles increased by 15% last year (they had increased by 65% until 2021 and by an average of 40% per year in the period 2017-2019) to 2.7 million.
Europe was the second largest market in the world with a quarter of the total.
The largest European market by volume last year was Germany (830,000 units), well ahead of the UK (370,000) and France (330,000). Spain registered just over 80,000 units.
In relative terms, the countries where electric vehicles accounted for the most car sales last year were Norway (88%), Sweden (54%), the Netherlands (35%), Germany (31%), the United Kingdom (23%) and France ( 21%).
For this year, after a first quarter with an increase limited to 10% compared to the same period in 2022, the year should end with an increase of around 25%.
The United States, the third largest market, grew relatively faster than the European and Chinese in 2022: 55% last year, with 800,000 units, a share of almost 8%, after 5% registered in 2021 and only 2% between 2018 and 2020.
