Fast delivery: Getir France announces its suspension of payments less than two years after its launch

This suspension of payments occurs at a time when the British economic daily “Financial Times” affirms, based on sources familiar with the case, that Getir’s takeover of its competitor Flink is being discussed.

Through acquisitions, the Turkish Getir group quickly established itself as a major player in fast grocery delivery. But its French subsidiary was placed in receivership on Tuesday, less than two years after it was created.

According to the CFDT, Getir has 900 employees in France, Gorillas 500 and Frichti 400.

Total debt of more than 17 million euros

The contrast between this announcement and the fanfare of Getir’s arrival in the country in mid-2021 is striking. The Turkish company then claimed its status as a forerunner of “fast trade”, that is, ultra-fast delivery and at home (or at the place of work) from a shopping basket that customers could not pick up at the nearest supermarket.

The company wanted to make “the luxury of home delivery” accessible, its founder, Nazim Salur, explained at the time. It is backed by very prestigious investment funds: Californian Sequoia Capital and Silver Lake, or even Mubadala Investment Company, a sovereign investment fund of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Two years later, the total debt was around 17.6 million euros at the end of March 2023, according to an internal company note. Getir France explains that it was the result of “an unfavorable contextual environment” with inflation and a “high level of rents and a very high number of leases.”

If in the meantime it has crushed its competitor Gorillas at the end of 2022 (which had previously bought the French company Frichti, present for several years in the country), Getir has also had to face the clamor of certain metropolises.

The latter fear being reduced to the status of “warehouse towns” by these new players, and even criticize the development of the “lazy economy.” In France, the government has paved the way for city councils to regulate the establishment of these players in the city.
