The military programming bill (LPM), which provides for an endowment of 413,000 million euros in seven years for the armies, will be examined in the Chamber of the National Assembly from May 22 and for two weeks, according to this Tuesday a parliamentary source. .
The executive wants the definitive approval in mid-July by Parliament of this budget text that covers the period 2024-2030, with annual increases described as “unprecedented”.
The Constitutional Council had paved the way at the end of April for its inclusion on the Assembly’s agenda, by validating the “impact study” that accompanies the bill. The LR deputies, followed by the other opposition groups, had questioned in particular the financial figures provided by the executive. Complaints retouched by the Elders.
The cost of technological leaps
According to the Ministry of the Armed Forces, the military programming law “enacts an unprecedented increase in the defense budget” to reach 69,000 million euros in 2030 compared to 32,000 million in 2017, although certain weapons programs had to be prioritized in detriment of ‘others.
The effort is justified, according to the ministry, by “the very rapid deterioration of the geopolitical context” marked by the war in Ukraine, but also by “the appearance of many technological leaps that have a cost.”
The government will not regain control of the Assembly agenda until May 15. Before that, the Lower House has a “control week” of the government’s action, which began on Tuesday after a fifteen-day break, then from May 9 a week dedicated to the texts proposed by the deputies.
