In which regions does a movie ticket cost more?

A movie ticket cost an average of 7.04 euros in 2021 in France, according to the CNC. An increase of 6.2% compared to 2020. But disparities between regions persist.

After a nightmare 2020, cinemas began to show their heads in 2021, registering 95.47 million admissions (+46.3%) for a turnover of 672.37 million euros (+55.4%), according to data of the CNC published this week.

A rebound that, however, did not allow the sector to recover the performance of 2019 (213.1 million admissions, for 1,500 million euros in revenue). In fact, the darkrooms only reopened on May 19, 2021, before being forced to respect reception meters, curfew, and then health pass. Covid obliges.

But since health restrictions were lifted, France’s more than 2,000 cinemas are still struggling to regain pre-crisis attendance. One of the main reasons for this non-return according to the spectators questioned by the CNC is the price considered too high. An observation shared by actor Kad Merad who suggested in mid-September to lower cinema prices to bring audiences back:

7.04 euros on average

What is it really? If seats can sometimes be sold for more than 15 euros in certain cinemas, especially in Ile-de-France, the average price nationwide is 7.04 euros.

In fact, many viewers can benefit from reduced rates (students, seniors, unemployed, season tickets, etc.). Also, some off-peak sessions tend to be cheaper, which lowers the average.

In the end, almost 62% of tickets are bought for less than 7 euros in France, 22.1% between 7 and 10 euros and 15.9% more than 10 euros. Even so, the price increase observed in 2021 (+6.2%) is the strongest in recent years. But in the past, the evolution of cinema ticket prices has often remained below inflation.

However, there are disparities between the regions of metropolitan France. Thus, it is in the cinemas of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur where the price is the most expensive (7.69 euros on average in 2021, +8.4%), ahead of Ile-de-France (7.35 euros , +7.1%). ) and the Center Val de Loire (7.13 euros, +5.8%).

On the contrary, you have to go to Bourgogne-Franche-Comté to find the cheapest places (6.51 euros on average, +4.6%), or even in the Pays de la Loire region (6.58 euros, +6.1%).
