Going abroad to fetch milk would be a “declaration of war” for French producers

On BFMTV, the president of the National Federation of Milk Producers, Thierry Roquefeuil, reacted to the words of Michel-Edouard Leclerc who said he wanted to stock up elsewhere in Europe “to get what is cheapest.”

Dairy farmers warn Michel-Edouard Leclerc. “If Michel-Edouard Leclerc is willing to look for milk in other countries to have cheaper milk – he would already have to find it – that would mean that he is declaring war on French milk producers,” the president of the milk association said Wednesday on BFMTV. National Federation of Milk Producers (FNPL), Thierry Roquefeuil.

Earlier in the day, Michel-Edouard Leclerc, a guest of RMC and BFMTV, said he wanted to “go around Europe to find what is cheapest”, referring to Poland and Portugal. “We ask that French law authorize us to do this.”

A price drop “impossible at this point”

Although they do not specifically mention milk, these comments are considered unacceptable by producers, who say they cannot lower their prices at the moment, despite demands from large retailers: “I can’t even imagine that in the dairy sector they would ask us price reviews. It’s simply impossible at this stage,” says Thierry Roquefeuil.

He also recalls that the dairy industry has “participated in the effort to limit inflation in 2022.” “So, today, coming to ask us to redo our efforts in 2023 to lower prices”, is “completely disconnected from the reality that we live in the dairy sector”, added Thierry Roquefeuil.
