Elisabeth Borne announces that the price of a pack of cigarettes will “increase like inflation”

Guest of Face to Face of the RMC and BFM TV, the Prime Minister was questioned about the rise in the price of cigarettes. He confirmed that this price would be indexed to inflation.

The news caused a stir at the end of last week: a pack of cigarettes for at least 11 euros in 2023. According to the echoesthis is what could result from the government’s ambition to increase the taxation of tobacco to index its price no longer to the inflation of two years ago but to that of the previous year, eliminating the ceiling up to 1.8%.

The head of government spoke on this issue this Monday morning during the Face to Face of RMC and BFM TV:

Another option considered

As a reminder, tobacco is one of the rare products that benefits from such a regime with respect to inflation. With the new formula that the Government is studying, which also wants to integrate it into the Social Security financing bill, the rise in the price of cigarettes next year will not be 1.6% like the inflation of 2021 but 5 to 6%, that is, the global increase price change during the fiscal year 2022.

This growth would push the minimum price of a pack of cigarettes to 11 euros instead of 10 euros and even 15 euros for rolling cigarettes. Nevertheless, The Figaro He assured that another option was also on the table: an increase limited to the cheapest cigarette packs.
