In order not to awaken the specter of the energy crisis, France is already preparing for the coming winter. The filling of gas reserves has accelerated in recent weeks. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) continues to arrive massively in Europe. And the passage of winter looks good.
In a few weeks, the concern about the gas supply for the coming winter has dissipated. In France, inventory levels have shot up from 27% to 45% since the end of March. This frenetic pace will last until the end of the summer. The Engie gas company plans to fill the gasoline tanks by the end of August, in time, before the cold season.
Liquefied natural gas is still preferred
Norwegian gas pipelines are the most active. But it is mainly LNG tankers filled with liquefied natural gas that continue to flood the French coast, towards the terminals of Dunkirk and Saint-Nazaire.
LNG still accounts for two thirds of France’s gas supply. And it still comes largely from the United States, which has become the world’s biggest LNG exporter since Europe no longer buys Russian gas.
The trend will continue as new production capacities will come online from 2026 in the Gulf of Mexico, again, and also in Qatar, which will operate the world’s largest liquefied natural gas field.
