Consumer confidence increased in May on the back of more positive household expectations about the country’s economic situation and the financial situation of households. The economic climate indicator fell, for the first time in 2023, with all economic sectors registering confidence breaches.
According to the National Institute of Statistics, the consumer confidence indicator has been rising since December and reached its maximum value since February 2022 in May. The lowest value since the start of the pandemic (in April 2020) was reached in November.
This evolution in May should emphasize the positive contribution of expectations about the future evolution of the country’s economic situation and the financial situation of the family, as well as the opinions about the past evolution of the family’s financial situation. According to the results of the ‘Business and Consumer Surveys’, only the prospects for the future evolution of major household purchases made a negative contribution to the confidence indicator.
