Pensions: 6 out of 10 French want the deputies to vote for the repeal of the reform

BFMTV SURVEY. According to a survey carried out by the Elabe Institute for BFMTV, 71% of French people want the Liot group’s bill to repeal the pension reform to be debated and put to a vote in the National Assembly. 61% of the French also want it to be adopted.

Opposition to the pension reform remains high, despite the fact that the law was enacted almost two months ago. Although the issue returned to the National Assembly, through a bill to repeal retirement at 64, the BFMTV announced this Wednesday the results of an Elabe survey that show that this initiative has the support of the majority of the population.

The independent group Liot (Freedoms, Independents, Overseas and Territories) has presented a text aimed at repealing the pension reform law. The presidential field, however, managed to have the key article of this text, which it considers inadmissible from the constitutional point of view, deleted in commission on Wednesday.

The deletion of article 1 of the bill was voted by a narrow margin (38 votes in favor, 34 against) thanks in particular to the votes of the group Les Républicains (LR) which added to those of the majority. The Liot group can resubmit the amendment during the review in public session, but the president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, can reject it under article 40.

71% of French people want to vote for Liot’s text

According to our Elabe survey, 71% of French people still want the Liot group’s bill to be debated and voted on in the National Assembly. 6 people in 10 also want it to be adopted by MEPs (61%, compared to 38% who do not).

The only electorates for which this opinion is not a majority are those of Emmanuel Macron and Valérie Pécresse in the first round of the 2022 presidential elections: 55% of the voters of the Head of State and 53% of those of the LR candidate did not they want the bill to be debated.

Opposition to reform remains strong

In addition, the opposition to the pension reform is weakening relatively little. 66% of those polled say they are against the government-led pension reform (including 40% who are strongly against it), a drop of three points compared to the Elabe poll on April 16. In a month and a half, the opposition has decreased mainly among executives (58%, -10) and to a lesser extent among retirees (48%, -4).

And this opposition manifests itself in an always strong mobilization. Interrogées sur leur état d’esprit à propos de cette réforme, 59% of the people recognized themselves in the affirmation “le combat continue”, a 4-point drop for rapport à mi-avril, and 41% young qu'”il faut Move on”.

The inter-union called for a new day of mobilization on June 6 to demand the withdrawal of the reform. This movement continues to receive the approval of the majority of the population. In detail, 38% of the people surveyed by Elabe say they support this mobilization, 20% sympathize with it, 13% oppose it and 14% are hostile to it. 15% of those surveyed say that they are indifferent.

Sample of 1001 people representative of mainland French residents aged 18 and over. The representativeness of the sample was ensured according to the quota method applied to the following variables: sex, age and profession of the interviewee, prior stratification by region and agglomeration category. Interrogation by Internet from May 30 to 31, 2023. Practically all the bases of the survey were carried out before the announcement of the vote of the deputies in the Social Affairs Commission of the National Assembly against the proposal of the LIOT group.
