How the Star Trek: Lower Decks showrunner helped Deep Space Nine and other legacy guest stars reprise their roles on the comedy series

Attention! The following contains spoilers for the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode “Listen to everything, trust nothing”. Read at your own risk!

Star Trek: Lower Decks sent things to Deep Space Nine in its latest installment by bringing some beloved characters from the beloved series into the fold. Nana Visitor and Armin Shimerman returned as Kira and Quark respectively, who were slightly dumber than their live counterparts. It is one thing to return to a character after decades of being away from him, quite another to place him within the parameters of a different genre. As such, I asked LD showrunner Mike McMahan on the challenges of bringing historical actors to the show and how it helps them fit into their roles.

“Listen to everything, trust nothing” is not the first time Star Trek: Lower Decks invited a franchise actor to reprise his role, albeit in a more bloated and comical way. (Fans may remember Jonathan Frakes’ run as Riker in the second season .) Mike McMahan discussed the process to not only help the franchise’s actors find the comedic side of their characters, but also to ensure the dialogue stays true to the actors’ roles:

For any Legacy character, this is what we can write that the actor will walk into the booth so that they can play him in a way that really makes them feel like they’re playing the same character he played decades ago, but in a way that does. also suitable. in the show. He has to fit in well with the stakes of the episode, and then you have to give them, in as few lines as possible, more or less this character pedigree. They immediately understand that the first things they say don’t disagree with … nearly a decade after making the shows they were in.

Star Trek: Lower Decks may have upset fans in the past due to some controversial and obscene scenes , but many fans would defend the care he takes to ensure that his enjoyment falls within the parameters of the franchise’s canon. That said, it’s no wonder Mike McMahan and the writing team went to great lengths to make sure Kira and Quark still sounded like them.

Fitting the character to the page is one thing, but you also need to guide talented actors to deliver a performance that matches. Star Trek: Lower Decks. Mike McMahan discussed the two-way process that takes place between him and the stars when it comes time for the stars to record their dialogue:

Whenever we go to register someone, I’m always like, for Nana [Visitor] or armino [Shimerman] or anyone else, I’m like, ‘Ok, that’s how I want you to play this, but now I want to do a take where [you] playing like this is not a comedy. You just remade Deep Space Nine. How would you play him directly for this show? And then they do, and suddenly it’s like, ‘Oh wait! Start over, but speed up a little. And then they also start playing with it and say, ‘Oh wait, wait, what’s that?’ And it’s like we’re getting what none of us could have achieved, but it’s a fusion of everything.

lower covers delivered an episode dedicated to Deep Space Nine and in the end it was a fitting homage to a show that didn’t get much love in this new era of Emigrate. Hoping that the delivery leads to discussions about a possible live DS9 related project . Or at the very least, perhaps superiors will consider taking some of the gods Emigrate The cast of the show will be back for something else. . But as I would expect from any of these storylines, I continue to be amazed by Mike McMahan and the thoughtful way he works with veterans of the franchise.
