“Santa Claus is garbage” turns 40: in Lille, an exhibition dedicated to the company Splendid

BFMTV followed Gérard Jugnot in the exhibition dedicated to the company that produced some of the most cultured comedies in French cinema.

In the Palais Rihour de Lille there are exhibitions of skis, winter sports outfits, scrabble games… so many costumes and accessories that were used in the filming of the tan go skiing, one of the most emblematic films of the Splendid. The feature films of this company made up of Josiane Balasko, Thierry Lhermitte, Christian Clavier, Gérard Jugnot, Marie-Anne Chazel and Bruno Moynot are at the center of the exhibition. Le Splendid – friends like a pigfrom September 10 to October 9.

BFMTV paraded through the corridors in the company of Gérard Jugnot, the unforgettable Félix du Santa is trash. The actor took the opportunity to admire an extraordinary painting: the one that Pierre (Thierry Lhermitte) offers to Thérèse (Anemone) in santa claus is trash, in which the latter appears nude with a pig. “I did you much less good than the pig,” laments Pierre. It is the painting used for the work that is on display, and not that of the film, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last August.

“I didn’t know it was so dirty, I hadn’t seen the flowers!” Gerard Jugnot laughs. “The other time I met a gentleman named Perrotin [ndlr: le galeriste d’art contemporain Emmanuel Perrotin], which has a large gallery in Paris. He said to me ‘Where is this painting?’ There were people who were looking for it, who would like to buy it! If it is, it’s priceless!”

“They are killing us!”

It is with time that santa claus is trash It has managed to establish itself as a classic. Because when he left, he had been received quite coldly. Some reviews are also on display in Lille:

“What fascinated me was seeing the critics of the time,” says Gérard Jugnot. “They are massacring us! ‘to the trash’, ‘vulgar’, ‘not funny’, ‘null’… These people are gone and we are still here. So there is a bit of satisfaction in thinking ‘hey, that it was not that bad

The film was also accused at the time of class contempt, presenting a Zézette (Marie-Anne Chazel) as a dark idiot, and Félix as a violent unemployed… It even took on a transgressive dimension when it was promoted, when the SNCF and the RATP rejected the poster campaigns, considering the title too controversial. (And it was nothing compared to the title originally planned by Splendid, who wanted to title his movie Santa Claus shot himself in the ass). A boycott that did not prevent them from welcoming 1.5 million viewers in theaters.
