It’s hard to understand Jamie Campbell Bower, the actor behind Vecna’s viral villain Strange things, Season 4, could have played some of the other greatest fictional characters of the past 20 years. Few projects live at the same level of relevance as Harry Potter Yes Duskbut in recent years the Netflix show has reached a similar threshold.
Bower was a guest of the Happy, sad, confused (opens in a new tab) podcast, where he talked about joining the Strange things problem for season 4. He was also asked about other projects he was being considered for. The actor, who eventually found himself in the Harry Potter Yes Dusk franchise, revealed that he was being considered for the main protagonists.
With regard to DuskBower was unable to audition due to a scheduling conflict. She clarified by saying:
They were really interested in getting me to read for Edward. They were like ‘the dedication Jamie brings to her roles, we’d be interested in seeing her’, and all that. And at the time it just didn’t work because it was around the same time Sweeny was released that they were interested in seeing me. I think life was so crazy and hectic that it was one of those things that never happened. Then he went into the second movie and they said, ‘Hey, you wanna go in and play a bad boy?’
Couldn’t audition because Tim Burton’s musical Sweeney Todd: The evil barber of Fleet Street was released. In the film, Bower played Anthony, the sailor who helped Sweeny Todd get to London. Bower then joined the Dusk problem towards the end of the film series, playing Caius in both installments of Sunrise.
Bower’s series of being considered a hero, but ending up playing the villain, didn’t start with Dusk. It all started when I was a child and Christopher Columbus, the director of the first harry potter movies, I was trying to pick the main character. As Bower explained:
Honey, I was ready for Harry. They came to my school looking for potential potters or potential cast members and picked me out of a group of people.
Bower ended up playing the young Grindelwald Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and repeated the same role in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. He explained on the podcast that he thinks one of the reasons he didn’t go far in the audition process was because of a line he told, saying:
I went to meet Chris Columbus in London for the first Potter and they asked us to play a joke. I had just heard this joke about why the fairy is sitting on top of the Christmas tree. It’s a very dirty joke because it’s a Christmas tree on someone’s butt. And I told the joke at the audition. There was this air of silence after I said it. I said ‘Well, it ruined everything.’ It’s time to move on. ‘
Of course, his chances of being a part of these franchises have come. Then, in the long run, he ended up getting a role that I think has the potential to become one of modern television’s most iconic villains.
