All SPOILERS ahead for barbarian. You have been warned.
Talk about a jump scare! My heart never sank in terror when Bill Skarsgård’s poor Keith was thrown against the wall by the monster of barbarian. And don’t even get me started with the terribly awkward moment when Justin Long’s AJ is force-fed by her. Who would think of such a scary creature? Well, it was the work of writer / director Zach Cregger, and he told us all about his origins.
On occasion CineBlend from barbarian interviews , the horror director shared his inspiration for the creature that surely still haunts many of our dreams. In his words:
it was more or less that [character design] From the moment I chose her for the film, I knew what she was going to be like. It’s this picture I’ve always had since I was a kid and I’ve read this Beowulf picture book, and there’s this drawing of Grendel’s mother and it looks like that. And I found this drawing online and gave it to supporters. I was like, ‘It will look like this!’ And I gave it to creators of creatures … And that’s what we did. So I took from that storybook, made changes here and there, but that was the inspiration.
That’s right, Zach Cregger was influenced by the super old English epic, BeowulfMore precisely the illustrated edition (opens in a new tab). It showed an image of Grendel, who is one of the book’s antagonists and is described as a “creature of darkness, exiled from happiness and cursed by God, the destroyer and devourer of our human species”.
However, after seeing the barbarian end , the creature is not the villain in the movie, but the progeny of his real villain’s horrific crimes against women over the years. The creature is officially called “The Mother” and is played by Matthew Patrick Davis, who wore a costume to portray the hatching creature.
when barbarian released in theaters a few weeks ago, his terrifying concept led him to wins his first weekend at the box office Yes receive praise from the public . Before releasing the hit horror film, Zach Cregger also shared with Gossipify that he brought a key change to the film through audience feedback during a test screening .
There is definitely a lot of shock factor barbarian between his two departures: one in which the characters of Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård find themselves in the predicament of the double booking of Airbnb, and a more comical one in which the character of Justin Long falls in the same basement while ridiculously measuring the square meters of the same place, it owns.
While The Mother is initially very scary, the film takes us on another journey later in the film when we learn that she isn’t even the scariest character in the film. The man who lives in the basement who created it together with the character of Justin Long, who recently raped a woman and ends up trying to kill Georgina Campbell’s character to save himself, is far worse than the hideous creature inspired by Beowulf.
following barbarianthere are many horror movie coming soon we are arriving just in time for the fall season.
