Jeremy Sisto of the FBI on Jubal’s “complicated” decision about his son and provides “multiple versions” of his performance

Warning: spoilers ahead of the “Prodigal Son” episode FBI aired on 4 October

FBI Season 5 first premiered in September, but the final episode has been a blast in the past as CBS finally aired the long-awaited Season 4 finale. Originally slated for May 24, the the episode was delayed in light of a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. At the time, Jeremy Sisto filed a case that could going “terribly wrong” for Jubal but fans have never seen the episode … until now, when CBS aired the season four finale as part of season five, and Sisto discussed his character’s decision when Jubal’s son is been taken hostage and how he approached in several ways.

It’s been over four months since “Prodigal Son” was originally slated for late spring calendar but it fits perfectly into the first two episodes of the fifth season. In fact, the premiere even took the time to do it prepare for Jubal’s predicament with his teenage son Tyler, who didn’t have many friends at his birthday party. So it didn’t come out of nowhere that Tyler didn’t want to “turn on” the people he was close enough to hang out with, even after discovering that his “friend” Zach killed a man, stole guns and was plan a school shooting.

Nor was it a surprise that he hadn’t blindly followed his father’s every word, after Jubal had let him down one too many times. The result was a hostage situation with very personal risks for Jubal, as his life as a son was in danger. Jeremy Sisto spoke to Gossipify in May when “Prodigal Son” was originally planned and explained how he approached the role of Jubal in the hostage crisis:

What was complicated and interesting was the truth that, however much [as Jubal] I wanted to shut him up, this guy who killed someone and was trying to kill more people was really nice to my son. So does Jubal use it? Yes, he is, but I don’t think he’s manipulative. You want to save this baby’s life. She feels for him. We are seeing more and more in this country, around the world, that those years can be extremely difficult and that there are a lot of mental health problems.

Jubal continued with Zach for a while as he tried to convince the troubled young man that he wanted to help him out of the hostage situation, but he eventually snapped and arrived a second after killing Jubal. Tyler walked in at a key moment and threw the gun aside, giving his dad enough time to take down Zach and the rest of the agents to run inside. Father and son saved the day and reconciled after an hour. . It was a nice break so that Jubal could finally catch up with him, which he probably really needed right now.

The fourth season of FBI (broadcast now available with a Paramount + subscription ) was emotionally intense for Jubal with Rina’s death and aftermath, so “Prodigal Son” was just the last big episode focusing on Jeremy Sisto’s performance. The actor shared that to act in such episodes, he doesn’t just offer one type of acting (spoken) he said:

Whenever they give me a great episode that has a lot going on, I try to give it as many versions as possible and then they have to decide how it goes because you never really know. I never know if the bow will work, so I try to give them more emotion, less emotion. From what I can tell from the ADR I just did, it seems to have worked quite well. I’m excited for the episode.

Jeremy Sisto gave several performances on different takes during the filming of “Prodigal Son” and now viewers could see which version the show has decided to use. The version released on October 4 showed Jubal on the verge of panic, but resisting to try to save his son. He was excited and looked like he was about to collapse, but he didn’t collapse.
